Interesting Facts of Monte Carlo
- Monte Carlo was founded (1858) by Prince Charles III of Monaco
- Near the quarter's western end is the world-famous Place du Casino, the gambling center. While tourists are welcomed through the doors in vast numbers, Monegasques are banned from entering the casino, including the royal family. This is to prevent Monaco natives from becoming addicted to gambling and in return, citizens of the Principality are granted tax-exempt status.
- Monte Carlo (literally "Mount Charles") is situated on a prominent escarpment at the base of the Maritime Alps along the French Riviera.
- In 1911 when the Constitution divided the principality of Monaco in three municipalities, the municipality of Monte Carlo was created covering the existing neighborhoods of La Rousse/Saint Roman, Larvotto/Bas Moulins and Saint Michel.
