The arms were granted on September 21, 1956. The arms are based on the seal of the city from the 17th century. The castle depicts the local castle, built in the 13th century, around which the town grew. (Heraldry of the World)

My Commentary: Hämeenlinna is nice in my view because of some aspects of it. It has a castle which is the symbol of the city (as shown in the coat of arms) and also has near it a military centre and a military museum with armoury of World War II. The city is one of the most structured places in its region of Kanta-Häme.

History of Hämeenlinna: There was a settlement called Vanaja by the lake Vanajavesi where the city now stands since the Viking Age. The castle was built in the late 13th century to secure Swedish power in central Finland. A village was established near Häme Castle to provide services and goods to its inhabitants. The village was granted city rights in 1639 and soon after that the King of Sweden moved it one kilometre (0.6 miles) south to the hill on which it still stands. The city is known for its schools and academies where many famous Finns have studied. Schools, government and the military have characterised Hämeenlinna's life throughout history. Finland's first railway line opened between Hämeenlinna and Helsinki in 1862. The current Hämeenlinna railway station(Rautatieasema in Finnish) was built in 1921. (Wikipedia)

Alajärvi: We visited Lauri and Lea's grandfather. After having his house taken by the Russians during WWII (he lived in Karelia) he built this yellow house out of nothing. We arrived there and he was eating and listening to his radio. He said he has been already to Rio de Janeiro City during the 70's because of a newspaper ad selling that "amazing trip". He said he enjoyed but was shocked with the poor people living on the streets.
