Ventimiglia (Imperia, Liguria, Italy)

The coat of arms of Ventimiglia consists of a gules shield, a golden lion centred inside it, crowned with a count crown of gold. Under the shield, the motto: AD ARMA IIT (The motto is a quote from a letter from Marco Clelio Rufus to Cicero). The coat of arms was granted by the Royal Decree dated 13 August 1929.

Province: Imperia
Region: Liguria
Country: Italy
My Commentary: I liked Ventimiglia since the first visit. A town with beaches, historical area and urbanisation. Complete for all kinds of visitors. It's near Nice, in France and during Summer many events happen, including the Medieval Games of Ventimiglia.

Interesting Facts:
- The municipal library of Ventimiglia has the second largest collection of 17th-century manuscripts and books in Italy

- The Giardini Botanici Hanbury (Hanbury Botanical Gardens), surrounding the villa of Sir Thomas Hanbury, La Mortola, are the biggest in Italy and among the finest in Europe, boasting many varieties of tropical and sub-tropical species that thrive in this mild climate.

- The name "Ventimiglia" derives from ancient Ligurian dialect “Albium Intemelium”, meaning capital city of the Intemelii.

- The old town of Ventimiglia is the second largest in Liguria

- There is a dialect spoken in Ventimiglia named Intemelio (Ventimigliese), Ventimigliusu

History of Ventimiglia: Ventimiglia is the ancient Albium Intemelium, the capital of the Intemelii, a Ligurian tribe which long resisted the Romans, until in 115 BC it was forced to submit to Marcus Aemilius Scaurus. Albintimilium became a municipium in 89 BC. In AD 69 the city was sacked by the army of Otho and Vitellius, but recovered to remain prosperous into the 5th century, surrounded by walls with cylindrical towers built at each change of direction.
In the Gothic Wars it was besieged by the Byzantines and the Goths, and later suffered from the raids of Rothari, King of the Lombards, but flourished again under Rodoald. In the 10th century it was attacked by the Saracens of Fraxinet. After a period as an independent commune, it was ruled by the Counts of Ventimiglia, and often had to fight with the Republic of Genoa.
In 1139 the Genoese attacked it by land and sea and forced it to surrender; the count continued to hold the city and countship as a vassal of the victors. The city rebelled more than once against the Genoese and sided with their enemies.
In 1271 in a war with Genoa its podestà Luca Grimaldi was captured. Ventimiglia was thus temporarily held by the dukes of Savoy(1389 and 1746) and King Ladislaus of Naples (1410). In 1505 it was annexed to the Genoese Republic, sharing its history until the early 19th century.
In 1269 the Count of Ventimiglia, Gugliemo Pietro I Balbo married Eudossia Laskaris, daughter of Emperor Theodore II Laskaris. From them started the dynasty of the Lascaris of Tenda. They maintained the sovereign County of Tenda until 1501 when the last of them, Anne Lascaris, married Renato of Savoy (in French René de Savoie) and transferred the County to his cadet branch ofSavoy dynasty. The most famous exponent of this branch of Lascaris was Beatrice of Tenda. (Wikipedia)

My Commentary: It was my first time in Italy and considering that Ventimiglia is the first city in Italy crossing from France, I thought I wouldn't see much difference from the French towns I thought I would see a small and calm town far from an urban centre, but I was totally mistaken! Ventimiglia is a fantastic town, it has its old town on the hill and from there you have a nice view of the sea, also there is a beach and the town has everything necessary for the basic things (supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants), it's not a countryside town, for sure. I enjoyed a lot Agosto Medievale, which is a series of games that the neighbourhoods of Ventimiglia play against each other and each one represented by its own colours. There was also one day of street fair, so the main street was blocked for cars and many products were being sold and also there was food, this fair was long, going the way alongside the sea

After stepping up the hill full of traditional Italian houses and being under heavy sun, I arrived at Cattedrale di Ventimiglia. The old town up the hills were under construction, but people could still access there, I just didn't know where exactly I was going because this time I didn't have plans, but that's the most exciting, to explore the unknown.

Ristorante Social Café Bar menu ventimiglia
Ristorante Social Café Bar - I need to taste the Italian pizza, but I was worried about the toppings. I saw this menu on the picture and there was one pizza named "Prosciutto" with the toppings "pomodoro, mozzarella, prosciutto" then I thought "ok, pomodoro is tomato sauce, mozzarella is obviously cheese but prosciutto?" then I found a way to ask the attendant what that was and he answered "jambon", which is in French, guessing I was from there, but it helped  I remembered my previous days in France, that "proscitutto" is ham! So I ordered that one!

Those last days in Italy would be the only ones I would be alone, all the other days I had very good company of old and new friends. When I finally got to the hotel I have booked weeks earlier in Ventimiglia, I was extremely tired of all my journey, so I took a good shower, organised some stuff and went for a walk.

These below are the songs (youtube playlist) I discovered while in Italy, apart of them I listened to a lof of Italo Dance as Gigi D'Agostino, Gabry Ponte...
