First recorded in 1431, the Red Eagle on three mounts becomes the standard representation of the city and the County only during the 16th Century. In 1502, the blue sea is added at the foot of the mounts (which by tradition represents the three hills on which the city was founded (the Greek city, the Roman city and Montalban). In 1578, a crown was added on the head of the eagle, and after the first French occupation (1695-1705) the Countal Crown and the palms are added to the shield. The inscription "Nicaea Civitas" at the bottom would be a later addition during the Piedmontese restauration of 1814. (Heraldry of the World)

My Commentary: Nice is a huge urban centre having the advantage of being at the sea. It's a very nice destination for those who like a dynamic and full of program kind of trip. There is History to explore, but without that calmness of the countryside.

History of Nice: Nice was founded around 350 BC by the Greek seafarers who had settled Marseille. They named the colony Nikaia, apparently to commemorate a nearby victory (nike in Greek). In 154 BC the Greeks were followed by the Romans, who settled further uphill around what is now Cimiez, where there are still Roman ruins.
By the 10th century, Nice was ruled by the counts of Provence but turned to Amadeus VII of the House of Savoy in 1388. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was occupied several times by the French, but didn’t definitively become part of France until 1860, when Napoleon III struck a deal (known as the treaty of Turin) with the House of Savoy.
During the Victorian period the English aristocracy and European royalty enjoyed Nice’s mild winter climate. Its relatively recent status as a French city, combined with its long-standing tradition of international visitors, gives Nice something of an Italian flair and an open, welcoming attitude towards travellers. Today it’s the second-most visited city in France after Paris. (source)

My Commentary: This time I could meet again my friend Paula and meet her boyfriend François. François was very nice to me taking me to many places and treating me as a real guest all the time. I don't speak much French yet, but I could talk to him in Spanish since he speaks this language. Paula also walked a lot with me there and was my tourist guide.
