Campos do Jordão (São Paulo, Brazil)

The coat of arms of Campos do Jordão follows the Portuguese heraldry tradition using the golden fort on the top, the silver field representing the purity of the air, the read mountain representing the high altitude of the town and the trees representing the typical tree of the region: the araucária. The two dates represent the founding year of the settlement and the emancipation to the status of town, from left to right.

The flag of Campos do Jordão was created by Arcinoé Antonio Peixoto de Faria and approved by the Municipal Law number 793 on May 2nd, 1960. The flag is based on the Portuguese heraldry tradition, being octagonal. The colours of the town flag, still in accordance with the tradition of Portuguese heraldry, must be the same contained in the coat of arms. Green symbolizes, in heraldry, honor, courtesy, civility, joy, abundance; It is the color of hope and hope is green because it alludes to the green fields in the spring, waiting for copious harvest. White symbolizes peace, work, friendship, prosperity and purity. Red symbolizes the paternal love, dedication, courage, selflessness, valor, courage, courage and bravery. The County Flag was hoisted for the first time on April 29, 1969 at Praça da Bandeira.

State: São Paulo
Country: Brazil
My Commenty: Campos do Jordão is a very interesting place with many hidden stories. Once in the area of Capivari, it's possible to see the similarities to the European styles of buildings and houses, specially the Germanic model. It's an expensive place, but a "must go" for sure. The local politicians are not doing a good job in preserving the town's History and style, since much of slums and crime have been flourishing for two or three decades now and not much worries are seen in order to raise local identity. For good or bad the only force really keeping the town alive is still the capitalist intention.

History of Campos do Jordão: The earliest known inhabitants of the region were native Indians belonging to various ethnic groups: puris, caetés, Guarulhos and Cataguas. From the sixteenth century on, the region began to be visited by explorers from Portugal as Martim Correa de Sa, Gaspar Vaz da Cunha and Inacio Caetano Vieira de Carvalho, this latter, around 1771, went up on Serra Negra in Mantiqueira towards the Itapeva Peak and settled with his family for 18 years in the fields of Mantiqueira. He founded Fazenda Bom Sucesso (Good Success Farm), and obtained an allotment letter of the governor of the Captania Real de São Paulo and fought bravely to defend those lands against his neighbour João da Costa Manso who belonged to the Captania de Minas Gerais and, thanks God, Inacio Cateano won and kept his territory Paulista.
On April 29, 1874, Pinto da Costa Mateus acquired some lots on the riverside of Imbiri. This date is nowadays considered the official date of the town's foundation.
From the late nineteenth century, the region has acquired a reputation as a place indicated for the treatment of lung diseases, due to its excellent climate. In the 1920s and 1930s, the first sanatoriums started to be built, dedicated to the treatment of lung diseases. In 1934, Campos do Jordao was separated from São Bento do Sapucai to constitute autonomous municipality. From the 1950s, the advance of medicine caused tuberculosis to stop being such a dangerous disease. Therefore, the town began to develop tourism. Currently, it is one of the main winter destinations in Brazil.

Anthem of Campos do Jordão:
Played by Banda Sebastião Gomes. Original video by NetCampos

Campos do Jordão
Maravilha da minha terra
Campos do Jordão
Joia do alto da serra
Campos do Jordão
Obra suprema do divino mestre
Que fez de tí, um paraíso terrestre!

Entre as matas verdejantes
E os pinheirais gigantes
Correm rios murmurantes
Sob um céu primaveril
És ó meu rincão paulista
O encanto do turista
É o orgulho do Brasil

Há, no alvor das floradas,
Poesias Imortais
E no tempo das geadas
Lindas manhãs hibernais,
Pois, em ti, a natureza,
Reuniu tanta beleza,
Que ninguem esquece mais!

Trip to Campos do Jordão 2015
My Commentary: We went to Campos do Jordão to commemorate my mother's birthday by eating in a restaurant and going to places in the town. Campos do Jordão is always a good town to explore and we took the chair lift which took us to Elephant Hill (Morro do Elefante) so I could take pictures from a high point. It's clearly possible to see how European Campos do Jordão looks like and it's a pity to remember that somehow it will be doomed by liberal politics.
