Carlos Barbosa (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil)

The coat of arms of Carlos Barbosa was renewed in 2010 and currently it contains a mural tower with five tops in silver colour (number and colour for cities). The side plumage is only a decorative effect. Below there are the name and date of the political and administrative emancipation.
Inside there is a Christian Cross, the Southern Cross (Crux), the registration and consecration crown of the patron saint Our Lady Mother of God. The background colour is Prussian blue.
In the centre-inside there is the Maria Fumaça (steam locomotive), a wooden block with an anvil and hammer on it representing the metallurgy an important economic activity of Carlos Barbosa, and a milk jar, linked to the origins and still one of the main activities of the local agriculture.

State: Rio Grande do Sul
Country: Brazil
My Commentary: Carlos Barbosa is very similar to the towns around it, having elements of Italy and the Gaúcho culture. It's a small and organized town with interesting places to visit as Tramontina company, the cheese and wine store Fetina de Formaio and Morro do Calvário.

Interesting Facts:
- Carlos Barbosa is considered the Brazilian capital of futsal

- Morro do Calvário in Carlos Barbosa has the 14 Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis)

- Santo Antão Abade chapel in Carlos Barbosa is one of the oldest Italian buildings in Rio Grande do Sul

- Morro do Diabo in Carlos Barbos is considered the best ramp in the State of Rio Grande do Sul for hang gliding.

History of Carlos Barbosa: On January 25, 1910, the intendant of Garibaldi, Julius Azambuja gave the place the official and definitive name: Carlos Barbosa, in honor of the Governor (1908-1913) in whose government was built and inaugurated the Montenegro-Caxias railway in the South. Before the European settlers, native indians of the Tupi-Guarani Nation or the Nation of JES lived on that area. The Luso-Brazilians (in reduced number compared to other late immigrants) went there with the purpose of organizing and managing the new colonies (engineers, surveyors, servants and small farmers). The arrival of the first Germans took place in mid 1855. The Swiss came to Carlos Barbosa in the years 1874 to 1876, settled in Santa Clara Baixa and Vale de Santa Luzia. Italians are the most numerous group of immigrants who settled there. After years of hard work with certain self-sufficiency, on September 25, 1959, it was signed by the then state governor Leonel Brizola, the decree establishing the new municipality of Carlos Barbosa.

Anthem of Carlos Barbosa:
Lyrics: Paulo Roque Carlotto
Melody: Irani Chies, Laurindo Hentz and Verealdo Chies

Esta terra vestida de verde
É o berço que nos acolheu,
Nela um dia nasceu nosso sonho
Sou o filho que dela nasceu.

Carlos Barbosa altaneira,
O teu povo é um exemplo de paz,
O tamanho do amor de teus filhos
Em grandeza de sonho se faz.

Canto a força da vida e de fé,
Esta gente constrói a nação
É meu povo que luta e avança
Prá ser dono do seu próprio chão.

Foi crescendo nas marcas do tempo,
Passo a passo trabalho e amor,
Hoje sendo uma grande cidade
Tem orgulho de ser do interior.

Esta terra tem sangue e suor,
Tem a mão que plantou e colheu
E o fruto de nossa vitória
Liberdade que a história escreveu.

My Photos in Carlos Barbosa - Trip 2014
São Paulo e Sul - Coat of arms

My Commentary: I will sum it for now, after about 10 years without visiting our little house in Ilha Comprida, I finally went there with my family. Once there I had the ambitious idea of visiting my friends in the South of Brazil, since Ilha Comprida is in the South of São Paulo. At the end the plan worked better than I thought and I visited many places going by bus and then returning from the extreme South to my town by air plane. The list above follows the sequence of the route I did. It's possible to click in all the towns and get information and photos:

São Paulo

Paraná

Santa Catarina

Rio Grande do Sul

Here below there is a picture with some stuff I brought from all the places I visited.

My Commentary: It was my first time in Carlos Barbosa and I liked a lot. The urban areas of the South of Brazil are very different from São Paulo City because they still maintain the traditional small town look and ambience. As the pictures below show, there are interesting places to visit there in Carlos Barbosa.
